Despite being a small island, Chalki has a remarkable gastronomic heritage. The island of Chalki has uniquely preserved its traditions, and this is true when it comes to food as well.
Local dishes can be found at all the tavernas of the island, while the bakery bakes “pitia” every morning, small pies filled with greens and cheese.
The tiny Chalki-style stuffed grape leaves with minced meat (“yaprakia” in the local dialect) may require effort to wrap, but they are offered everywhere.
The handmade “makarounia” (pasta) with sautéed onions and local cheese has gained fame beyond the island’s borders. The main ingredients are handmade pasta and the unique soft cheese made from goat and sheep milk, still prepared in the traditional way. The dish is completed with “tsiknosi,” onions that simmer for hours in olive oil.
The “Ofto” stuffed goat, roasted in a traditional wood-fired oven, is a hallmark dish of the island of Chalki.
The renowned parrotfish of the area are plentiful and are either fried or expertly cooked in season.
Finally, the most delicious shrimp you will ever taste is the “Chalki” shrimp. Small in size, but exceptional in flavor. It is the smallest of its kind, growing up to 7 cm, and resembles a juvenile shrimp. It has a vibrant orange color and a taste that is slightly sweet. It is fried and eaten whole, shell and all, and is the most delicious shrimp you can eat!
