They are issued by the Registry Office of the place where the birth, marriage, civil partnership or death was registered respectively. Civil status records are not ‘transferred’ to another civil status office

The Certificate of Family Status is issued to persons registered in the Family Register of the Municipality of Halki after an identity check of the applicant by showing his/her identity card or passport.

The declaration of marriage is made at the Registry Office of the Municipality of the place of the event. One of the two spouses or a third party with a notarial power of attorney is obliged to make the declaration.

The marriage must be declared within 40 days of the date of the marriage. After this deadline, a fine is imposed by the Secretary General of the Decentralised Administration.

In the declaration of the person who performed the marriage, the exact place and date of the marriage, the exact dates and places of birth of the spouses, the nationalities, the numbers of the Municipal Register, A.F.M., A.M.K.A., the marriage degrees as well as the pension insurance institutions and their professions must be indicated.

In the case of foreigners, the above statement must include their names and surnames separately, as well as the names and surnames of their parents at the time of the marriage, in Greek and in brackets in Latin characters.

Baptismal names of foreigners who have not been recognised by their country and are not mentioned in their passports should not be added as the second letter of their name in the marriage declaration. 

The authenticity of the signature of religious officials must be verified by their respective ecclesiastical authorities.

  • A declaration of the person who performed the marriage, issued at the time of the ceremony either by the religious minister if it is a religious marriage or by the Municipality if it is a civil marriage.
  • Declaration of surname of children, unless included in the above declaration.
  • Identity cards or Passport with residence permit (for foreigners). In the case of a pink card holder (political asylum application), a certificate of deposit of a passport or any other valid document certifying identity is also required from the aliens’ police station that issued the asylum application.

The Declaration of the Cohabitation Contract is made at the Registry Office of the place of residence of the parties, as indicated in the Contract.

If the parties do not have a common domicile, then it is declared at the Registry Office of the place of residence of the declaring party.

One of the two parties is obliged to make a declaration.

The Cohabitation Contract must indicate the exact place and date of the pension, the exact dates and places of birth of the spouses, their nationalities, their Civil Registry numbers, civil status, civil status, marital status, as well as their pension insurance institutions and their professions.

In the case of foreigners, their names and surnames, as well as the names and surnames of their parents, which they bear at the time of the conclusion of the contract, must be written separately in Greek and in brackets in Latin characters..

Baptismal names of foreigners who have not been recognised by their country and are not mentioned in their passports should not be added as the second letter of their name in the Cohabitation Contract

For a birth certificate to be issued in physical presence, an identity card, passport, health booklet or driving licence is required. Acceptance by a third person requires an authorisation certified by the authenticated signature of the authorising person.

The following have the right to apply for a guarantor relatives’ certificate:

α) One of the deceased’s closest relatives.

b) The heirs of the deceased by will.

c) The person having the power of attorney or power of attorney of one of the guarantor relatives of the deceased.

d) The person having a legitimate interest by order of a public prosecutor.

  • Responsible Declarations of two citizens with pre-printed text for the next of kin of the deceased, one of whom may be a relative, are required only in the following cases: a) When there is a regular registration of the deceased in the Municipal Register of the Municipality, but there is no record of the civil status of the deceased, i.e. the research carried out does not clearly show the relatives or persons to be included in the certificate; or b) For a male deceased who is not registered in the Municipal Register of the Municipality or in any other municipal register of a municipality in the Country, but is only registered in the Register of Boys of the Municipality.

The declaration is made at the Registry Office of the place of birth within 10 days of birth as provided by law.

After 10 days and up to 100 days, a fine of EUR 100 is payable. After 100 days, a fine of 300.00 euros is imposed, by decision of the General Director. Secretary of the Decentralized Administration.

The parents, the doctor, and anyone else who attended the birth are responsible for the birth declaration.

Every baptism that takes place within the boundaries of the Municipality must be registered at the Registry Office of the Municipal Unit of the Municipality.

The declaration is made at the Registry Office of the place of birth or at the place of baptism where a baptism report is drawn up by the Registrar there, who sends the baptism to the place of birth.

The baptism is declared by both parents in order to have the status of naming, with the confirmation of the priest for the celebration of the sacrament and the demonstration of the identity card of the declaring parents.

There is no time limit on the baptismal declaration which is made within a reasonable period of time.

Each of the spouses or a third person with a special notarial power of attorney has the right to declare the divorce.

The deadline is 30 days from the date on which the court decision became final. After one month, a fine is imposed in accordance with a decision of the General Court. Secretary of the Decentralised Administration.

The declaration of dissolution of the partnership is made by one of the parties.

Required Documents:

The cohabitation agreement is dissolved (regardless of whether it is a cohabitation agreement subject to the provisions of Law 3719/2008 or Law 4356/2015), in accordance with the provisions of Article 7 of Law 4356/2015.

Specifically if it is to:

  • for consensual dissolution, with the presentation of a notarial deed of dissolution of the cohabitation agreement.
  • for unilateral dissolution, with the production of a notarial declaration, if an invitation for consensual dissolution has been previously served by a bailiff on the other party and three (3) months have elapsed since service.
  • automatically, if a marriage is contracted between the parties, on production of a marriage certificate.

Death must be reported to the Registry Office of the place of death or burial within 24 hours of the event.

The next of kin, anyone who was present at the death or the funeral home, are obliged to declare the death, after presenting the written death certificate of the physician certifying the death and the identity card of the deceased (which is delivered to the Registry Office) or an affidavit of loss.

The death must be declared before the burial can take place.

  • Medical certificate of death, legally certified for the authenticity of the signature of the physician who certifies the death. The certificate must include all the details of the civil status of the deceased

The child’s naming declaration is irrevocable and is declared before the child’s baptism.

The naming is done with the declaration of both parents or only one parent, who must necessarily bring with him/her a written authorization of the other, legally certified for the authenticity of the signature. The written authorisation must state the main name that the parents wish to give to their child (in Greek characters for foreigners) and the child’s date of birth.

Foreigners must have a legal residence permit in the country.
